Just in time for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc., consumer electronics shopping engine Retrevo has redesigned and now says it’s using artificial intelligence, along the lines of dating sites like eHarmony, to find the perfect “match” between consumers and their would-be electronics purchases. The site seeks to simplify electronics shopping with what it calls the Retrevo “product adviser.”

AT&T has announced that it acquired pay-per-call (PPCall) vendor and ad network Ingenio for an undisclosed amount. The press release suggests that the company was acquired primarily as a technology platform and perhaps secondarily for its distribution network. That network includes AOL, Microsoft (mobile), Jingle Networks (1-800-Free411), Medio Systems and JumpTap (mobile), Switchboard and go2 (mobile), among a few other sites. Ingenio was founded in 1999 and had revenues in 2006 of approximately $85 million, primarily from its legacy online advice business.

This summer, the National Hockey League took a cheap shot. No, they didn’t redesign the league’s uniforms or put a team back in Winnipeg. Rather, they took control of overseeing the league’s websites. Since the domains had previously been run by each franchise, naturally the move has some team marketers feeling left out in the cold.

IAC Looks to Expand Web Presence in China from the Wall Street Journal reports Ask.com is planning on coming to China within two-years.
Barry Diller said he plans on spending $100 million to bring Ask.com to China. Diller told the Wall Street Journal, “We’ve certainly got enough capital to do damage,” and admitted there is risk to such an undertaking. Diller plans on replicating the strategy they used to expand in the European markets, with this China expansion.

This Thursday is the US Thanksgiving holiday, so Friday marks the official start of the holiday shopping season for a large percentage of US consumers. Infamously known as “Black Friday” (for profit potential), many “big box” retailers will open at midnight or in the early morning hours to long lines of consumers hoping to capture deals on limited supplies of heavily discounted consumer electronics, toys, apparel, and so on. Indeed, Black Friday shopping has become something of a sport for people who are willing to brave the crowds, lines, and frequent “bait-and-switch” retail tactics. The following Monday was dubbed (by Shop.org) “CyberMonday” in the hopes of capturing some of the same behavior and buzz associated with the start of holiday shopping.

So, I got this Google-branded lip balm from the Google Store. I couldn’t resist it—it just seemed like such a kooky thing for them to brand. After getting it, I feel like Google might be approaching some sort of critical mass, and that they could be in danger of losing control of their trademark. Is this a trademark lawyer’s nightmare?
